Stories of Women’s Grassroots Leadership and Climate Action in India: Book Design
Asar Social Impact Advisors works on social and environmental issues by conducting research, ground truthing, and understanding local contexts in order to build innovative strategies that are rooted in reality. Asar convenes conversations and helps build relationships between various stakeholders to be able to sustain collaborations essential to catalyse momentum and result in change.
A set of five illustrated comic strips were developed by the Gender and Climate Programme at Asar. These told powerful stories of hope, resilience and transformative leadership of women at the frontline of the climate crisis in India. Asar reached out to us to package these comic strips into a single graphic narrative that would bring together these five journeys of grassroots action in the form of a book.
Our process was to break apart the panels of the comic strips and create an interplay of different scales and introduce empty spaces for the illustrations in shine in. This allowed us to develop a range of different base layouts, which were then enhanced through the use of typography and additional illustrations that we created, in the same style, for use as story dividers.
Finally, the cover was imagined as a new hope where the five characters can be seen contributing to the fight against climate crisis in their own unique ways in an attempt to heal the broken earth.
